Senior Pet Care
AppointmentWe’re there through your pet’s golden years.
Common diseases to start watching for as your pet ages include:
1. Arthritis: you may see your pet slowing down, having trouble jumping on or off their favorite spot or not being able to finish out their walk
2. Dental disease: see our dental section
3. Diabetes
4. Hyperthyroidism cats
5. Kidney diseases
Prevention
1. Keeping them lean and encouraging muscle development by exercising properly
2. Keeping them up to date on their parasite control..they are never too old to contract parasites
3. Annual to biannual veterinary visits where we can monitor joints, for heart murmurs, check dental health and screen for masses/cancer.
4. Senior Wellness Bloodwork to screen for preventable diseases
5. Monitoring your pet: watch for behavior changes, increase in drinking and urination, change in eating habits, change in mobility. Slight changes that you notice can give us clues in picking up disease earlier. You are your pet’s best advocate.
We’re here to help you support your senior pet. You can support your aging pet by providing proper bedding that is easy on their joints, making sure they have a safe place to stay away from children when they need their space. Older pets can get dementia just like people. If you start noticing that your pet is acting anxious, pacing getting up at night for no apparent reason then please let us know and there are various things we can try.
Supplements
There are various supplements for your senior pets and we would be happy to discuss them with you and decide what would work best.
- Glucosamine
- Fish Oils
- Tumeric
- Adequan
Acupuncture and Massage
many pets start to get muscle tension and aches and pains just like we do as we age. Acupuncture and massage can be a great benefit to our older friends. We can show you techniques that you can do at home as well.
Medications
I usually start with the items listed above, but as pets get even older I find that there comes a time where we need to add in pharmaceuticals depending on the individual pet starting usually with Tramadol or Gabapentin for dogs and Gabapentin for cats.
